- Description:
-
- Abstract:
-
The Bedrock Geology of New Jersey consists of statewide and countywide data layers (contacts, faults, folds, dikes). The data are provided in: ESRI's ARC/INFO Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The GIS data were scanned and digitized from United States Geological Survey Miscellaneous Investigations and Open-File Series 1:100,000 scale geologic maps compiled from 1984 to 1993.
- Purpose:
-
The series is intended to provide the public with basic geoscience information for use in geoscience, natural resource and environmental analyses. The geologic themes include geologic units, their descriptions, structural features (faults, folds and dikes).

NAME OF DATA: geology, folds, dikes, faults
DESCRIPTION OF THE TYPE OF DATA ARC/INFO (v. 7.1) files are spatial data containing vectors with arc-node topology and related attributes.
DATA SOURCE: Geologic contacts, folds, dikes, and faults were scanned and digitized from United States Geological Survey Miscellaneous Investigations Series Map I-2540-A (Bedrock Geologic Map of Northern New Jersey), Open-File Series Map 95-253 (Bedrock Geologic Map of Central New Jersey), and Open- File Series Map 95-254 (Bedrock Geologic Map of Southern New Jersey). The files were geo-registered to United States Geological Survey 30x60 minute, 1:100,000 scale topographic maps. The state boundary is taken from the STATE reference coverage available from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, Office of Information Resources Management, 401 E. State St., Trenton, NJ 08625. The data meets the national map accuracy standards for the 1:100,000 scale. Please refer to metadata files for STATCO for more information on data origin, quality, and limitations.
DATA ORGANIZERS: Refer to the United States Geological Survey's Cartographic Technical Standards for mylar compilation information. Data mylars were vectorized by Ronald Pristas.
DATE OF COMPLETION: June 30, 1999
DATA AUTOMATION AND ACCURACY : The maps were scanned using a CalComp ScanPlus II roll-feed, E-format, two-camera scanner at 400 dots per inch. The scanned image accuracy is reported at +-.25 percent. A CalComp 9500 digitizer with an accuracy of +- 0.005 in. (+-0.127 mm) was used for editing the data and inputting the dikes data. All features were vectorized or digitized as board-inches. Proof-plots were generated and overlaid onto the original Miscellaneous Investigations and Open-File maps. Tics were digitized into the coverages using the 7.5 mjnute graticule on the base map. The coverages were then transformed into NAD83 state plane coordinates utilizing the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection STATCO coverage. Four tics on each mylar were utilized to register the data for digitizing (editing). A root-mean-square (RMS) error of 0.005 was required (approximately 41.67 feet at 1:100,000 scale). Proof plots were made for each data set on mylar and compared to the original data. Linework that deviated from the original position by more than 0.02 inch were re-digitized, re-plotted, and corrected until acceptable results were obtained.
AUTHORS NOTES:
Enlargement of the data to more detailed scales than specified could result in registration errors. If information is needed at more detailed scales, please contact the New Jersey Geological Survey to determine the status of detailed mapping.
